A Message from the Eagle Scout
During my years in scouting I have had the opportunity to see many great
things, meet all kinds of people and do things I would not have done outside
of scouting. As I look back I will always remember the friendships I have
made, the challenges I have taken and the memorable experiences of a
lifetime. I will take things I have learned in scouting and use them to my
advantage. I do not know what I specifically want to do for a career but
scouting has helped me to narrow down my options. I will work my hardest to
succeed and never give up. Scouting does not just teach knots ,cooking,
survival skills and hiking. It has taught me to make the best of myself and
how to become a leader, not just a follower. Scouting has taught me to be
proud of myself, and to look to what lies ahead.
My Eagle project was to construct a life size model of a Native American
Longhouse. The Longhouse is an addition to a Native American village exhibit
at the BOCES Center at Caleb Smith State Park. This was built alongside other
Eagle projects such as a wi~ teepee, and other Native American artifacts. The
project required the construction of a box frame made of cedar trees. This box
actual framework of the longhouse. In the ground were 3 foot 1 inch diameter
galvanized piping which were cemented into the ground. The longhouse
uprights were placed into these cemented pipes. The roof consists of 7 arches
which were placed on top of the uprights. They were secured by galvanize T's
give it a realistic natural look. The finished model was 15 feet high and 24 feet
long. I started planning my project on May 19, 2001. I completed working on the
to teach elementary students from schools all over the area.
